Fuji Xerox Targets High-Growth, Continuous-Feed Print-On-Demand Market With Two New Systems

Singapore, May 1st, 2003 – Fuji Xerox today introduced two versatile continuous-feed digital printers that enable the company to aggressively pursue the highest growth segments in continuous-feed printing: print-on-demand (POD) and publishing.

Both the new DocuPrint 850 and the DocuPrint 425 print at 195 feet per minute for high-volume production of POD jobs in corporate reprographic departments and graphic arts firms, as well as transaction work in corporate data centers and service bureaus.

The new machines meet POD and publishing requirements by printing PostScript and PDF files on pin-less - as well as pin-fed - papers at 600 dots-per-inch print resolution using Xerox's industry-leading DocuSP and DigiPath Production Software, part of the Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Collection. In addition, the DocuPrint 850, which is configured by pairing two DocuPrint 425s, enables duplex printing of as many as 850 two-up duplex impressions per minute.

"The DocuPrint 425 and 850 strengthens our portfolio of continuous-feed printers, permitting our customers to move into higher-volume publishing and transaction digital printing applications," said Howard Witt, General Manager - Printing System Business. "Our mission is to support customers in growing their business, and finding better ways to do great work. The Xerox continuous-feed line is a successful complement to our industry-leading line of cut-sheet production printers."

With the two new models, Xerox now markets six continuous-feed printer models ranging in speed from 350 to 1,000 ipm, complementing the industry's broadest line of cut-sheet color and monochrome printers and presses.
Both new models can accommodate all major mainframe and publishing data streams. On the transactional side, IBM IPDS (Intelligent Print Data Stream) is handled natively, and Xerox Line Conditioned Data Streams (LCDS) through an optional Xerox Enterprise Output Management Services (EOMS) V-Services management system, which is part of the Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Collection.

For PostScript and PDF files, the new machines employ a Xerox DocuSP controller, which uses the same operator interface as more than two dozen Xerox DocuTech, DocuColor and DocuPrint cut-sheet models, facilitating job sharing among continuous-feed and cut-sheet printers. DocuSP and DigiPath -- which extends DocuSP functionality to address scan and make-ready, archiving and Web-based services -- are already familiar to thousands of print providers, easing their learning curve. These components also can bring substantial new efficiencies to non-Xerox shops.

Both printer models employ the Xerox-exclusive Intelligent Print Line Manager control software and Print Line Bus for benchmark flexibility in managing print engines and feeding and finishing devices. Among the capabilities they enable are drag-and-drop job configuration at the controller, in-line operation of feeding and finishing devices from multiple vendors, and job initiation on either printer in a duplex configuration without rewiring or switching devices. Such flexibility is especially critical for the growing number of print operations that produce both transactional and publishing documents, such as consolidated in-plant print shops.

Both print environments also benefit from such capabilities as printing widths as wide as 17.5 inches with the pin-less paper option. A Synchronization Verification System provides page integrity verification, ensuring proper side-one/side-two page matching. Application of processing marks without changing the print application accommodates late changes of post-processing equipment and supports most leading cutters. A large, 15-inch touch screen graphical user interface makes set-up and operations easier.

Availability

The DocuPrint 425 and DocuPrint 850 are available immediately in Asia Pacific Region. Options are available as Xerox DocuSP for publishing page description languages and Xerox EOMS V-Services for additional transaction data streams. Xerox offers a range of pre- and post-processing equipment through partners, including saddle-stitch and perfect-binder systems.
